IPL 2010 : Mumbai Indians! Duniya Hilla Denge!

Mar 19, 2009

Indian skipper Dhoni recently acknowledged what an asset he has in the immensely experienced, senior players that there are in the Indian team currently touring New Zealand. He was reported in the cricket news as speaking about Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and V.V.S. Laxman who he can approach for a solution any time he finds himself facing a problem.

Oscar Wilde may have said that “Experience is merely the name that we give to our mistakes”, but the fact is that even if the seniors of the Indian cricket team got their experience from making mistakes, the juniors still have the benefit of that hard gained experience to guide them. And captain M S Dhoni is not unmindful of the fund of experience he has on hand with the likes of international cricket players such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and V.V.S. Laxman to counsel him, which he acknowledged in the cricket news recently.

Dhoni recognised that experience counted for a lot especially in the longest format of international cricket. With VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid also joining the test side, he now has them to give him valuable advice apart from India’s oldest campaigner, Sachin Tendulkar. “They have been playing cricket for quite some time. They have performed wherever they have played. They are the real assets. Not only from a batting point of view, they provide a fair amount of input when it comes to bowling. It helps you as a skipper, when you look around and see guys with experience of at least 75 Test matches and some with over 100 Tests. If you are having tough time, you can go to any of them and they will sort a problem out for you. It’s a big asset to have in the side,” he said.

Dhoni’s view is echoed by Kiwi Skipper Daniel Vettori, who said, “Their recent form dictates that India is on par with Australia and South Africa in Test cricket. Those three teams seem to be battling away for that number-one spot.”

Vettori also acknowledged that playing against a side like India was a learning experience for his players, when he said, “For our bowlers, anytime you get one of those players out, it can be one of your best memories in cricket. If a guy steps up and gets five or six wickets against this much vaunted batting line-up, that’s going to be a special day for the bowler and vice-versa, if someone scores runs. So we are trying to challenge the guys in the team through that aspect as well as trying to win games for New Zealand.”
