Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar's commitment in improving the standard of his team was witnessed on Monday at the Seddon Park where the Indians practiced ahead of Wednesday's first Test match against New Zealand on Monday where he gave invaluable tips to seamer Ishant Sharma to bowl in-wingers.
During the early part of the nets, Tendulkar wanted to know whether Ishant was trying to get the ball move into the batsman after the lanky fast bowler tried to to do so unsuccessfully. "Are you trying to get it to move in?" questioned the little master after the first two deliveries had failed to swing in. Once Ishant nodded his head, Tendulkar went on to tell him he was making it too obvious. "It seems you are trying too hard to move it in," Tendulkar not only advised him but went on to show him the release that was required to bowl an in-swinger. "You might over-pitch for a while, but keep trying it. First get the release right, the rest will follow," advised the champion batsman, who can bowl a bit. Once Ishant started getting his in-swingers right after an initial struggle, Tendulkar acknowledged the bowler by saying "now are getting right". The moral of the story is "Taking wickets is the key in Test matches and not just containing the batsmen." Ishant's release of the ball initially was good to contain the batsmen but not take wickets and after receiving tips from Tendulkar he started getting the wicket-taking in-swingers right and looked a much dangerous bowler by clean bowling Virender Sehwag off an inside edge when the Delhi stars turn came to bat.
