lot has been written and said about Sachin Tendulkar in the recent times pertaining to his form, fitness and the (expected) retirement call. The moment little master fails to deliver, critics from every corner pounce upon him and are ready to write down his fate. Though, without doubt, it could be said that Sachin is past his prime, but nevertheless, there couldn’t be any reason to doubt the greatness of the little master. Sachin deserves much more respect and adulation for whatever he has achieved for the country in his illustrious career and it should be left upon him to decide when he his going to call it quits.
Such is the dominance of this little master in world cricket that Australian pace legend Glenn McGrath and the West Indian great Sir Vivian Richards unanimously agree that Tendulkar does not need anybody other than himself to decide when the time is right to call it a day. McGrath even feels hurt when he sees critics scrutinizing a career as glorious as Tendulkar''s through statistics. McGrath feels that Sachin remains as enchanting as he was when he first burst into the international scene as a 16-year-old against Pakistan in 1989
It is not that Sachin is worshipped like God in India itself, but he commands respect and adulation throughout the world for his batting prowess. The only thing which pinches most is that the slightest of his failures invites criticism of great hue from various quarters, which shouldn’t be. McGrath says that for all his vulnerabilities that have been exposed over the years, he is still a force to reckon in world of cricket.
Why is that we, Indians, blow things out of proportion when expectations are not met. After all, Sachin is a human and not a machine, and he is bound to have some humanly lacunas which we should take into consideration. After the failure of ‘Fab Four’ on Sri Lankan tour, this uproar has reached its epitome.
We should take a cue from Warne who says- “Tendulkar has a touch of genius about him. He is the best in the business.” Mc Grath also doesn’t seem to be satisfied with critical remarks on Sachin. He opined- “I know he is coming towards the end of his career but I think he has earned the right to decide when he runs out of the urge to play. He has enough financially and now it is up to him to seek motivation and if he finds it, he must continue to play.
Sachin is playing because he loves the game and feels that he can continue for a couple of seasons more. There is no question to doubt his ability and his dedication towards the game. It shows a lot of guts to be playing for the country even after so much of criticism. We shouldn’t forget of what he has done for the country and instead of being critical of his continuation, critics and fans should enjoy whatever is left in him (he is far better than most of the younger ones).
Also, we hope eagerly that Sachin surpasses Lara as the highest run getter in Test matches very soon (against Australia) and becomes the only player in International history to be at the top of both tests and ODIs. Let us enjoy the remaining heroics of this great master, as in all likelihood we are not going to find another Sachin in our lifetime- as a player like Sachin is born in a century!
